*YP 4.3 (M4) rc1 build is still pending
*YP 4.0.13 was released
*For the 4.3 release, we have merged and switched to the 6.5 kernel. Many different fixes for issues merged but for one issue we have not found a fix and there are continuing serial console problems. Workarounds are in place but appear only partially successful.
*Other 4.3 release blocking issues:
**There are space issues with strace ptest images
**There are QA regression report generation failures (patch in testing)
**Busybox serial console handling is broken (patch in testing)
**A curl CVE fix is due tomorrow
*We hope to build 4.3 once these issues are resolved
*A fix for the openssh ptest issue merged, thanks Mikko
*The bblock/bbunlock patches have merged, thanks Julien
*ttyrun merged, which improves serial console handling for images shared between different platform and addresses long standing issues, thanks Ross
*‘remove’ API for the hashequiv server merged, thanks Joshua
*Yocto Project is pleased to announce that the Sovereign Tech Fund is working with us, and this is how we are funding the items in the RFQ:

'''Ways to contribute:'''<br/>
*As people are likely aware, the project has a number of components which are either unmaintained, or have people with little to no time trying to keep them alive. These components include: patchtest, layerindex, devtool, toaster, wic, oeqa, autobuilder, CROPs containers, pseudo and more. Many have open bugs. Help is welcome in trying to better look after these components!
*There are bugs identified as possible for newcomers to the project: https://wiki.yoctoproject.org/wiki/Newcomers
*There are bugs that are currently unassigned for YP 4.3. See: https://wiki.yoctoproject.org/wiki/Bug_Triage#Medium.2B_4.3_Unassigned_Enhancements.2FBugs
*We’d welcome new maintainers for recipes in OE-Core. Please see the list at: http://git.yoctoproject.org/cgit.cgi/poky/tree/meta/conf/distro/include/maintainers.inc and discuss with the existing maintainer, or ask on the OE-Core mailing list. We will likely move a chunk of these to “Unassigned” soon to help facilitate this.
*Help is very much welcome in trying to resolve our autobuilder intermittent issues. You can see the list of failures we’re continuing to see by searching for the “AB-INT” tag in bugzilla: https://bugzilla.yoctoproject.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=AB-INT.
*Help us resolve CVE issues: CVE metrics
*We have a growing number of bugs in bugzilla, any help with them is appreciated.

Yocto Project Weekly Status October 3rd, 2023

Current Dev Position: YP 4.3 M4 (Feature Freeze)
Next Deadline: 2nd October 2023 YP 4.3 M4 build date

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.3 M4 is due to build this week. We have challenges due to the kernel version.
  • YP 3.1.28 was released.
  • YP 4.0.13 is due to be released
  • The biggest challenge for the M4 build is that the 6.4 kernel was made EOL. Thanks to hard work from Bruce we have 6.5 recipes but this kernel version is throwing multiple errors in testing:
    • cryptodev breaks (patch in master-next)
    • x86 image testing randomly fails with login issues (both selftest and testimage)
    • arm kvm ptest images randomly throw jitterentropy errors and fail
    • strace ptest failures (x86 and arm)
    • arm LTP testing fails with OOM crashes

We don’t have fixes for the OOM issue or strace at this point, potential ideas for other issues are undergoing testing.

  • The numpy reproducibility issue was finally root caused and resolved.
  • Issues with mesa-native and contamination with llvm from the host have been resolved
  • Improvements to bitbake-getvar output and handling of undefined values were merged
  • The openssh ptest intermittent failure does have better logs available but we’ve yet to decode what it means:

http://autobuilder.yocto.io/pub/non-release/20230917-2/testresults/qemuarm64-ptest/openssh.log

  • The project is working on improving its security processes and policies, there are emails on the mailing list discussing this. Please highlight these to any parties who may be interested or have useful feedback.

Yocto Project Weekly Status September 26th, 2023

Current Dev Position: YP 4.3 M4 (Feature Freeze)
Next Deadline: 2nd October 2023 YP 4.3 M4 build date

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.3 M3 rc1 was released and work is being done on the autobuilder QA email step to improve for future releases. The regression report is still being worked on.
  • YP 3.1.28 is under review for release
  • YP 4.0.13 rc2 is in QA
  • The numpy reproducibility issue remains and is proving extremely problematic with many failed builds. We may have to merge the debug patch into master.
  • The openssh ptest intermittent failure does have better logs available but we’ve yet to decode what it means: http://autobuilder.yocto.io/pub/non-release/20230917-2/testresults/qemuarm64-ptest/openssh.log
  • The changes to error for overlapping symlinks under sstate control have highlighted some issues, particularly in world build configurations however so far these have proven to be real issues that needed addressing in the configuration as the files overlapped and caused determinism issues.
  • The number of build failures from incoming patches remains high and is causing patch review delays and headaches for the maintainers. We are not here to debug people’s patches, we’re only meant to be catching accidental/occasional issues.
  • Patches for enabling wider SPDX tooling and testing in core are being proposed but there are quite a few python module dependencies. We do have good tooling/class support for python modules so the maintenance overhead of these is relatively low but the number of modules in core has increased steadily. Feedback welcome.
  • Since the 6.4 kernel is already EOL, we are considering a 6.5 kernel for 4.3 as the best of several difficult options.
  • The project is working on improving its security processes and policies, there are emails on the mailing list discussing this. Please highlight these to any parties who may be interested or have useful feedback.

Yocto Project Weekly Status September 19th, 2023

Current Dev Position: YP 4.3 M4 (Feature Freeze)
Next Deadline: 2nd October 2023 YP 4.3 M4 build date

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • The M3 rc1 QA report is available but the regression report failed, raising a dilemma on whether to release, the TSC needs to discuss
  • YP 3.1.28 is in QA
  • The numpy reproducibility issue remains
  • The openssh ptest intermittent failure does have better logs available but we’ve yet to decode what it means: http://autobuilder.yocto.io/pub/non-release/20230917-2/testresults/qemuarm64-ptest/openssh.log
  • A significant flaw was found in bitbake’s inotify usage which has been causing rare intermittent build failures. These would only affect usage where BB_SERVER_TIMEOUT was enabled or tinfoil was used (e.g. recipetool, devtool, bitbake-layers). The issue means we’ve switched to using stat() calls and mtime to detect changes. External tools using tinfoil which change files will need to add an API call to have bitbake refresh its caches.
  • On a positive note, those issues do explain some of the timeout and AB-INT failures that have been puzzling us for some time. Fixing it also allows the flush() call removal in server logging, which should improve bitbake server’s performance during heavy I/O.
  • There are patches pending to tweak the layout of deploy/licenses/ and SPDX’s file layout to avoid overlapping files in builds breaking due to “shared” files being removed unexpectedly. We will likely enforce non-overlapping files for symlinks under sstate control going forward to avoid these issues in future.
  • We are continuing to see large numbers of version upgrades of recipes, some of which are having destabilizing effects. This may mean we have to reduce the numbers being accepted to stabilize for release.
  • We’re happy to be able to announce that some of the work in the RFQ will now be progressing, specifically that:
    • Marta Rybczynska (Syslinbit) will be working on the security topic
    • Alexander Kanvin (Linutronix) will be working on the core workflow topic
    • Savoir-faire Linux will be working on the toaster and VSCode topics
    • BayLibre will be working on the patchtest and project tooling topics
    • Michael Opdenacker (Bootlin) will be working on the binary distro topic
    • Smile will be working on the meta-openembedded topic area

We’d also note that Tim Orling (Konsulko) will be working on the layer index.

Yocto Project Weekly Status September 12th, 2023

Current Dev Position: YP 4.3 M4 (Feature Freeze)
Next Deadline: 2nd October 2023 YP 4.3 M4 build date

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • We are now at feature freeze for 4.3 and 4.3 M3 is in QA
  • The numpy reproducibility issue is not solved unfortunately
  • There are continuing intermittent ptest issues for openssh and glib-networking amongst other issues
  • The testing for qemuppc and qemumips/qemumips64 has been reduced and we’re no longer testing core-image-sato-sdk on these platforms.
  • SPDX manifests are now enabled by default for OE-Core/nodistro as well as poky.
  • Patches have been resubmitted to radically alter the do_unpack process for license compliance reasons. The code is complex and hard to understand and will have a performance impact on builds as well as making things hard to debug. *The risk of not taking the changes is that for some legal departments, the SPDX data isn’t detailed enough. The compromise between performance and ease of use vs. legal requirements is a tough one. We don’t really want to have two codepaths either. Feedback/review on the series welcome.
  • We’re happy to be able to announce that some of the work in the RFQ will now be progressing, specifically that:
    • Marta Rybczynska will be working on the security topic
    • Alexander Kanvin will be working on the core workflow topic
    • Savoir-faire Linux will be working on the toaster and VSCode topics
    • BayLibre will be working on the patchtest and project tooling topics
    • Michael Opdenacker (Bootlin) will be working on the binary distro topic
    • Smile will be working on the meta-openembedded topic area

We’d also note that Tim Orling (Konsulko) will be working on the layer index.

Yocto Project Weekly Status September 5th, 2023

Current Dev Position: YP 4.3 Feature Freeze
Next Deadline: 28th August 2023 YP 4.3 M3 build date

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • We are now at feature freeze for 4.3.
  • YP 4.2.3 was released
  • The qemupcc issue was tracked down to the glibc 2.38 included in the new uninative version. Upgrading along the glibc stable branch appeared to resolve the issue. It seems ppc was worst affected as the emulation is slow.
  • We’re hoping to have tracked down the numpy reproducibility issue to non-deterministic blas library queries but we didn’t definitively work out which system was introducing the issue so we can’t be sure it is resolved.
  • We need to upgrade to qemu 8.1.0 for security fixes but it is broken for x86. If we backport fixes for that issue, mips virtio breaks. We’ve filed a bug upstream: https://gitlab.com/qemu-project/qemu/-/issues/1866
  • We continue to see intermittent ptest failures for glib-networking and openssh, help would be much appreciated.
  • Due to the number of issues related to mips and ppc being encountered with few people interested in helping fix them, we are likely to reduce the amount of testing being done on those targets before release. If you’re using these targets please let us know as we’re likely to drop them if there are no users.
  • M3 will build when we have a resolution to the qemu 8.1.0 issue and ideally fixes for the intermittent ptest issues.
  • We’re happy to be able to announce that some of the work in the RFQ will now be progressing, specifically that:

Yocto Project Weekly Status August 29th, 2023

Current Dev Position: YP 4.3 Feature Freeze
Next Deadline: 28th August 2023 YP 4.3 M3 build date

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • We are now at feature freeze for 4.3.
  • YP 4.0.12 was released
  • YP 4.2.3 is due to be released
  • The qemuppc ssh command hangs continues to be a mystery. It seems to be something in recent master that regressed it but it isn’t the kernel, the binutils upgrade, systemd or glibc or qemu. We’ve not seen any other hangs so the x86 issues may have been something else.
  • The acl/xattr changes are blocked on a hard requirement on tar 1.35, it is unclear how we’d achieve that in all cases.
  • Patches have been resubmitted to radically alter the do_unpack process for license compliance reasons. The code is complex and hard to understand and will have a performance impact on builds as well as making things hard to debug. The risk of not taking the changes is that for some legal departments, the SPDX data isn’t detailed enough. The compromise between performance and ease of use vs. legal requirements is a tough one. Yocto Project Weekly Status August 22nd, 2023

Current Dev Position: YP 4.3 M3
Next Deadline: 28th August 2023 YP 4.3 M3 build date

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • We are now a week away from feature freeze for 4.3.
  • YP 4.0.12 is pending TSC approval and due to release
  • YP 4.2.3 is in QA
  • We merged the 6.4 kernel and were able to resolve the preempt-rt issue (thanks Paul!) however intermittent hangs on qemuppc still remain as well as questions of x86 reliability on the autobuilder.
  • There are patches pending which remove source control revisions from PV and move them to PKGV, further simplifying WORKDIR paths and generally improving the code and the way AUTOREV works. This allows SRCPV to be removed as it is no longer needed. We believe all review discussion has been resolved at this point.
  • Intermittent autobuilder issues, autobuilder hardware problems and large numbers of very intensive rebuilds with low sstate reuse are causing challenges in keeping patches flowing. Some intermittent issues were identified and resolved.
  • Glibc 2.38 merged and a new uninative release was made.
  • We continue to see intermittent ptest failures for glib-networking and openssh, help would be much appreciated.
  • CVE metrics are still high but much reduced for master, thanks!
  • We’re happy to be able to announce that some of the work in the RFQ will now be progressing, specifically that:

Yocto Project Weekly Status August 15th, 2023

Current Dev Position: YP 4.3 M3
Next Deadline: 28th August 2023 YP 4.3 M3 build date

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • We are now two weeks away from feature freeze for 4.3.
  • YP 3.1.27 was released
  • YP 4.0.12 is in QA.
  • The 6.4 kernel upgrade is still blocked as we’ve seen two nasty looking hangs in automated testing: https://autobuilder.yoctoproject.org/typhoon/#/builders/148/builds/349/steps/12/logs/stdio https://autobuilder.yoctoproject.org/typhoon/#/builders/148/builds/354/steps/12/logs/stdio as well as a preempt-rt boot error that appears more consistently: https://autobuilder.yoctoproject.org/typhoon/#/builders/72/builds/7616/steps/36/logs/stdio The intermittent issues are a significant risk to automated testing stability and it is hard to know how to proceed as few people are willing/able to help with them. We’ve upgraded qemu 8.0.3 -> 8.0.4 just in case that helps.
  • The various systemd issues have mostly been resolved although the AUH did break as a result and will have to be fixed and rerun.
  • Build layout changed slightly with the removal of PE and PR from the WORKDIR path.
  • There are patches pending which remove source control revisions from PV and move them to PKGV, further simplifying WORKDIR paths and generally improving the code and the way AUTOREV works. This allows SRCPV to be removed as it is no longer needed.
  • Significant fixes were made to both the binutils and gcc testsuites which avoid many of the mips toolchain test failures. The failure counts are roughly the same (few hundred) for each architecture now resulting in ~3200 failures overall.
  • There are now consistently ~200 ltp ‘controllers’ failures on both arm and x86 targets.
  • A new uninative version was released to add some patches to patchelf to avoid bugs.
  • A new test addition to oe-selftest caused another test to fail consistently on the autobuilder and this has been tracked down to one test corrupting the other if they run in the same TMPDIR. This only happens with specific parallelism settings where they happen to run together or with no parallelism.
  • We continue to see intermittent ptest failures for glib-networking, mdadm and openssh, help would be much appreciated.
  • CVE metrics are worrying with significant numbers of open CVEs against master, many of them kernel related. The 6.4 upgrade should help but that is blocked. Mickledore is also badly affected with a record high count. https://autobuilder.yocto.io/pub/non-release/patchmetrics/

Current Dev Position: YP 4.3 M3
Next Deadline: 28th August 2023 YP 4.3 M3 build date

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.3 M2 was released.
  • YP 3.1.27 was rebuilt after a toolchain tests fix and is in QA
  • YP 4.0.12 rc1 was built but will need to be rebuilt due to an autobuilder failure due to certificate expiration.
  • The merged systemd upgrade has destablised the autobuilder. We don’t want to revert the upgrade but the regressions are causing multiple test failures and this along with other issues in multiple patch series means patch merging is effectively stalled.
  • There are two issues blocking the 6.4 kernel upgrade, one is qemuarm drm boot errors and the second is broken networking for systemd images under qemu.
  • Support for a new recipe sanity testing task (do_recipe_qa) was merged and there is a hope/plan to move more “processing” operations over to this task to improve general parsing time.

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.2.2 is due to be released
  • YP 4.3 M2 is due to build this week
  • Our toolchain test results showed high failure rates for qemuarm64 and qemuppc. Three patches have merged removing ~210,000 failures taking the overall failure count to 15,000 in 3,200,000 tests. There is a summary on the OE-Core mailing list: https://lists.openembedded.org/g/openembedded-core/message/184498
  • There have been further ptest-runner issues so further patches are in testing
  • The 6.4 kernel has merged but is not the default yet as various issues are resolved
  • We’re considering switching to a pre-release version of autoconf due to improvements in largefile/64 bit time support.
  • We have an open request for quotation for several engineering tasks/projects: https://www.yoctoproject.org/community/yocto-project-engineering-request-for-quotation/ The document as an update added to the end and the RFQ closes on 24th July.

Yocto Project Weekly Status June 20th, 2023

Current Dev Position: YP 4.3 M2
Next Deadline: 17th July 2023 YP 4.3 M2 build date

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.3 M1 was released
  • YP 3.1.26 is in QA
  • The project has some exciting plans in progress and we're now in the fortunate position of seeking quotations for some development work. For more details please see this page on our website: https://www.yoctoproject.org/community/yocto-project-engineering-request-for-quotation/
  • The automated regression reporting saw some issues for the M1 report so this is being worked on.
  • There are pending patches to enable layer-<layername> overrides which is particularly useful for enabling layer specific QA checks. This does bring some changes of behavior for QA checks on bbappends
  • usrmerge is now enabled by default for poky-altcfg, in preparation for the changes being required by systemd.
  • The 6.1 kernel hang regression was identified and we reverted the problematic patch until the correct fix merges and filters through the stable kernel trees.
  • There have been a lot of ptest issues this week, not least after issues with “No-section” tracebacks were fixed, leading to an increase in reported failures as that was masking issues. There are some fixes proposed for ptest-runner but further help is needed on the various failures.
  • We have been approached by a potential new maintainer for the eclipse plugins. There were some questions about who was still using it and what the test matrix should look like so please let us know if you are and we can connect you.
  • The tunctl functionality for runqemu has been dropped as the ip tool can handle everything needed.

Yocto Project Weekly Status June 13th, 2023

Current Dev Position: YP 4.3 M2
Next Deadline: 17th July 2023 YP 4.3 M2 build date

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.3 M1 has passed QA and is due to release
  • The 6.1 kernel continues to have stability issues which appear to be introduced between 6.1.26 and 6.1.28, we’ve not seen the issue so far with 6.1.27. We know it happens on 32 and 64 bit x86 and occurs even with just one CPU enabled. This has not been seen by other kernel users which is a concern too.
  • We continue to see problematic intermittent failures on the autobuilder. We’re struggling to make progress against these and they are feeling overwhelming. We’re open to ideas on how we might try and address them. Experience shows that if left unresolved/ignored, people do end up hitting them in real world usage or during testing of their own products.
  • The autobuilder test matrix has seen some revisions:
    • to split out toolchain testing to a separate target
    • remove some duplicate testing for efficiency
    • optimize reproducibility testing to improve speed

We’re also about to add limited meta-clang testing to the test matrix.

These should improve autobuilder test execution time but has made one test race issue much more common which will need to be addressed.

Yocto Project Weekly Status June 6th, 2023

Current Dev Position: YP 4.3 M1
Next Deadline: 5th June 2023 YP 4.3 M1 build date

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.3 M1 is due to build this week
  • The remaining issue with SPDX manifest generation on the autobuilder should have been identified and fixed so we plan to enable the create_spdx class by default in poky assuming a successful test build.
  • The recent 6.1 kernel stable updates appear to be causing a couple of different intermittent autobuilder issues. We’re working to try and get to the bottom of that, we’re hoping further updates to the 6.1 series may pull in fixes for the regressions.
  • Patch merging has been slow this week as we struggled to bisect failures down to the problematic commits (potentially the sqlite version bump).
  • There are a number of patches still queued in master-next as it is unclear whether they’re ready for various reasons. For bandwidth reasons these will likely be deferred to M2, people are just stretched too thinly to do otherwise, frustrating as it is.
  • Big thanks to Ross for helping look at the high number of CVE issues open against master.

Yocto Project Weekly Status May 30th, 2023

Current Dev Position: YP 4.3 M1
Next Deadline: 5th June 2023 YP 4.3 M1 build date

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.2.1 and YP 4.0.10 have been released
  • M1 is due to build next week.
  • We upgraded to gcc 13 after fixes for the major issues in OE-Core were found
  • New uninative releases were made to enable support on distros where they’re upgraded to gcc 13 versions.
  • The 5.15 kernel was dropped from master in preparation for adding a new kernel version later in the development cycle.
  • There is discussion about changing the CVE_CHECK_IGNORE functionality, please comment in the discussion on the list if you have opinions on what we should do there.
  • FILE_LAYERNAME support was added to bitbake, paving the way for layer specific override support.
  • Autobuilder intermittent issues continue to be an issue. One set of intermittent issues was tracked down in glib tests and a fix was accepted upstream but other issues remain.
  • A number of recent changes combined together to lower our overall patch count to the lowest we’re seen in years, it is great to see patches improving over time, albeit slowly!

Yocto Project Weekly Status May 23rd, 2023

Current Dev Position: YP 4.3 M1
Next Deadline: 5th June 2023 YP 4.3 M1 build date

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.0.10 is ready to release after TSC review
  • YP 4.2.1 is in QA
  • M1 is approaching fast (two weeks left), so please try and get any major changes submitted soon.
  • Patches have been merging into master, thanks to everyone for both review feedback and iterating on patches
  • We need to upgrade to gcc 13 soon, this is blocking enabling Fedora 38 workers on the autobuilder as we don’t have a compatible uninative release.
  • There are time64 patches being proposed to handle Y2038 issues on 32 bit architectures which likely need further discussion since the compiler flag changes aren’t without risk and potential side effects.
  • We’re aiming to improve documentation as we go along in this release, please keep this in mind when sending patches. Adding to the documentation as we go will make the release a lot easier.
  • Autobuilder instability is a concern as known good builds are regularly hitting issues, particularly the “ubuntu 20.04 libgcc not found” issue which is likely python version specific but there are other intermittent issues too. As an example, three of the last nightly builds failed in succession. Due to the intermittent nature of these bugs, few people are willing to spend time on them but they mean patches are being very slow to merge. Help is very much needed but it is hard to be specific about where/what the issue is unfortunately.

Yocto Project Weekly Status May 2nd, 2023

Current Dev Position: YP 4.3 M1
Next Deadline: 5th June 2023 YP 4.3 M1 build date

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.2 rc3 has passed QA and is pending TSC approval for release.
  • YP 4.1.4 is now in QA.
  • Patches are merging into master for 4.3.
  • Emails to all currently listed maintainers have been sent to check the entries are up to date. If anyone is interested in taking on maintenance of any unassigned recipes, please send a patch.
  • We discovered warnings were not being correctly handled on the autobuilder after the buildbot controller upgrade. That should now be fixed but it means some regressions may have crept in, we’re working to confirm if that is the case or not.
  • We’re in the process of adding checks to ensure that ptests returning no test results trigger warnings. This should ensure we catch this situation earlier since ptests should always return at least one test result. python3-cryptography is an example of a recipe that recently regressed unnoticed in this way.

Yocto Project Weekly Status April 18th, 2023

Current Dev Position: YP 4.3 M1
Next Deadline: 28th April 2023 YP 4.2 Release

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.2 rc2 has passed QA and is likely to be released once we have TSC approval and the release notes and migration guide are ready.
  • YP 4.0.9 passed QA and is also due to be released imminently.
  • Patches have started to land in master for 4.3 and the branch is open for development
  • The OE TSC has been discussing some focused work on improving the patch submission and new user documentation. There are currently multiple out of date documents in various wikis and READMEs which contain good information but also things which are obsolete. The aim is to identify the documents which should be merged and turn them into one comprehensive document, likely in the Yocto Project documentation set. This new document would also address some of the changes in developer background we’re seeing, such as being unfamiliar with mailing lists.
  • We have a growing number of bugs in bugzilla, any help with them is appreciated.

Yocto Project Weekly Status April 11th, 2023

Current Dev Position: YP 4.2 M4
Next Deadline: 28th April 2023 YP 4.2 Release

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.2 rc2 is now in QA
  • YP 4.0.9 is being built
  • Due to some concerns about crate urls, 4.2 rc1 was abandoned and rc2 built.
  • linux-yocto is no longer excluded from CVE reporting on master, thanks to all who have helped triage the CVE list for the kernel. https://autobuilder.yocto.io/pub/non-release/patchmetrics/cve-status-master.txt
  • We’re happy to announce that Steve Sakoman is going to be supporting the mickledore stable series.
  • The langdale release series will now wind down after one final point release
  • Patches should soon start flowing into master for 4.3
  • The project is looking at a funding opportunity where projects with a specific development focus may be able to be funded. Ideas coming to mind might include bringing back patchtest or toaster’s automated testing. If anyone has ideas that we’d be able to find people to work on (contract based?) within a reasonable timeframe, we’d be interested to hear the things people feel would make the biggest difference to the project.
  • We have a growing number of bugs in bugzilla, any help with them is appreciated.

Next Deadline: 3rd April 2023 YP 4.2 M4 Build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.2 final release will build this week
  • We’re not aware of any major changes still pending merge, release branches have been created.
  • We’re making a final cleanup of CVE data/patches and some host gcc version tweaks and then we should be good to make the release build for 4.2
  • The autobuilder controller upgrade has broken error/warning log extraction. If anyone has time/interest in fixing the log observer code, help would be welcome.
  • We have started reporting CVEs for linux-yocto on master to raise the profile of these issues and the need to improve the CVE metadata. https://autobuilder.yocto.io/pub/non-release/patchmetrics/cve-status-master.txt
  • We have a growing number of bugs in bugzilla, any help with them is appreciated.

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 3.1.24 was released
  • YP 4.2 final release is due to build next week
  • Before final release we’d like to get updates to use the new CVE database format merged, there are also some rust fetch/tooling improvements that may also be potential merge candidates.
  • The glib-2.0 upgrade has reported issues with the malloc changes so we will defer that until after release.
  • There is some testing of the autoconf 2.73 pre-release version (2.72c) happening to ensure we’re in a good position when it finally does release, issues are being reported upstream.
  • The project autobuilder controller is now on the latest upstream buildbot version. Our plugins and other integration were updated to match.
  • Our autobuilder console UI has had some improvements to fix bug and improve the layout (https://autobuilder.yoctoproject.org/typhoon/#/console)
  • poky-bleeding should now be usable but hasn’t been integrated into our CI yet.

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.1.3 was released
  • YP 3.1.24 has passed QA and is being reviewed for release
  • We are continuing to prepare for final release of 4.2 with the build now due in ~1.5 weeks
  • We’re happy to see a huge improvement in the reliability of the python ptests thanks to a dedicated pytest plugin to correctly format the output into a form we can parse, thanks Ross!
  • Work on making “poky-bleeding” operational again has highlighted some challenges around AUTOREV support. There are patches pending to bitbake (in -next) to highlight problematic situations users may end up in, wider testing of those patches by AUTOREV users would be helpful.
  • CVE levels in the LTS releases are at higher levels than they have been for a while which is a concern.

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.0.8 was released
  • YP 4.1.3 passed QA and is due to be released
  • We are now in feature freeze for 4.2 and preparing for final build in ~2.5 weeks
  • Patches continue to merge into master and there are some good bug fixes in there. Some version upgrades are merging either due to low risk or due to the likely need from other components during the lifetime of the release.
  • Support for parallel ptest execution with a ptest per image was merged, along with various dependency fixes for the ptest packages to ensure this works as expected. This takes ptest execution time from 3.5 hours to around 45 minutes on the autobuilder.
  • The bugzilla was upgraded to the version 5 series which brings access to the REST API and functionality useful to the triage team. Testopia was dropped.
  • Regression reports for release builds are now looking fairly accurate
  • CVE levels in the LTS releases are at higher levels than they have been for a while which is a concern.

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.2 M3 is in QA
  • YP 4.0.8 is ready to be built
  • YP 3.1.23 was released
  • We are now in feature freeze for 4.2. There are some patches which we will take in M4 such as the CVE fetching changes.
  • We now have the ability to track regression changes between releases using resulttool for example with a command like “yocto_testresults_query.py regression-report 4.2_M1 4.2_M2”. This did already spot one regression in quilt ptest which we’ve tracked down and fixed.
  • A regression report was included with M3 using the above tool automatically: https://autobuilder.yocto.io/pub/releases/yocto-4.2_M3.rc1/testresults/testresult-regressions-report.txt - some tweaks are needed but it is good progress.
  • CVE levels in master look much better, thanks to everyone who helped. We are in the process of including kernel CVEs in these reports for master going forward.
  • We have a growing number of bugs in bugzilla, any help with them is appreciated.
  • We have had patches from a few new submitters, this is very very much appreciated and great to see. Some bugs have moved forward as a result of this. All of these changes combine together to make the project what it is!

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 3.1.23 is due to be released.
  • We are due to build M3 and are at feature freeze for YP 4.2.
  • We saw further version upgrades this week and a number of bitbake hang fixes or fixes for exits with no output. There are a few remaining issues to conclude then we should be in a good position to build M3.
  • CVE levels in master are reducing. The remaining concern is the large number of linux-yocto CVEs which have shown up since we last updated the exclusion lists. The full list can be seen here: https://autobuilder.yocto.io/pub/non-release/patchmetrics/cve-status-master.txt Help in resolving these so we can remove the exclusion on linux-yocto on all reports would be appreciated.
  • We have a growing number of bugs in bugzilla, any help with them is appreciated.

Current Dev Position: YP 4.2 M3
Next Deadline: 20th February 2023 YP 4.2 M3 Build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.0.7 and YP 4.2 M2 were released.
  • The 6.1 kernel issues we were seeing on the autobuilder were resolved by a point upgrade on the kernel to address virtio networking issues and some patches to address perf reproducibility issues.
  • A summary of some of the key issues was sent to the mailing list: https://lists.openembedded.org/g/openembedded-core/message/176476 The bitbake command timeout and PR serv async io issues still need to be addressed. Thanks to everyone who helped address the other items there, it was much appreciated.
  • We upgraded to glibc 2.37 and a corresponding uninative upgrade is pending.
  • Fixes for locale on target were merged with new automated locale tests to ensure these keep working.
  • We merged patches for basic loongarch support but there is no testing of it.
  • CVE levels in master are still high and we need to resolve several of the issues
  • We have a growing number of bugs in bugzilla, any help with them is appreciated.

Yocto Project Weekly Status January 31st, 2023

Current Dev Position: YP 4.2 M3
Next Deadline: 20th February 2023 YP 4.2 M3 Build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.0.7 and YP 4.2 M2 are in QA
  • We switched to the 6.1 kernel by default for M2. Unfortunately there are a couple of intermittent issues that seem to have crept in. One is a reproducibility issue in perf, likely with some host component causing it as it only occurs on second builds. The second appears to be an intermittent networking issue accessing a python http-server for testing dnf which appeared after the kernel version change.
  • We are continuing to see other intermittent failures which are limiting how quickly we can merge changes. A summary of some of the key issues was sent to the mailing list: https://lists.openembedded.org/g/openembedded-core/message/176476
  • There have been changes to the way the codeparser cache in bitbake stores data which should reduce cache size, reduce the times data needs to be written out and generally help performance.
  • CVE levels in master are still high but there are patches in progress for most issues as I understand it.
  • We have a growing number of bugs in bugzilla, any help with them is appreciated.

Yocto Project Weekly Status January 10th, 2023

Current Dev Position: YP 4.2 M2
Next Deadline: 23rd January 2023 YP 4.2 M2 Build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.1.2 is in QA
  • A large number of package upgrades have merged bringing us up to date with various upstreams.
  • We have started moving code out of core bbclass files into the function libraries to help reduce parsing memory use, volumes of data transfer and sstate signature data sizes. Help is welcome in developing further patches to improve our function libraries.
  • The autobuilder controller has been relocated to deal with connectivity issues, we do have some issues to iron out before things are back to normal service. We were unable to upgrade the buildbot version as there were too many other moving pieces.
  • We are trying to upgrade uninative to include libgcc to deal with pthread_cancel failures. Newer versions of patchelf are proving problematic and appear to be causing segfaults and we’re trying to untangle this from other issues.
  • We have reverted the tune for qemux86-64 back to corei7-64 since we still have v2 hardware that won’t work properly with v3 under KVM and similar.
  • A uninative bug has been exposed by recent bitbake datastore improvements which could cause sstate to be missed/duplicated.
  • We merged a number of neat rust improvements which add on target cargo support and added automated QA tests for this functionality so we can ensure it continues to work and doesn’t regress. Thanks Alex Kiernan, we hope to see more series like this one!
  • CVE levels in master are becoming worrying again, help would be appreciated to address the open issues.
  • The autobuilder maintenance window now occurs on Mondays.

Yocto Project Weekly Status January 3rd, 2023

Current Dev Position: YP 4.2 M2
Next Deadline: 23rd January 2023 YP 4.2 M2 Build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.2 M1 and YP 4.0.6 were released.
  • Builds on the autobuilder are problematic at present due to connection losses with the controller machine. We understand the cause and will be migrating the controller to a new server/location in the next maintenance window to address this.
  • A number of invasive bitbake changes have merged including a change to add threading to bitbake’s server/cooker. This will allow us to attempt to resolve various UI/server hang related open bugs and to improve the user experience, e.g. Ctrl+C handling. If people do see issues with hangs, please report them and include the tail end of the bitbake-cookerdaemon.log file.
  • The bitbake cache changes to optionally include more hash debugging information did merge. This currently triggers only for the bitbake -S operations but once that mode is triggered for memory resident bitbake, it is “sticky” and will remain set until it unloads. We have seen some OOM issues on autobuilder workers which may be related to this, more debugging is needed to check on bitbake’s memory usage.
  • Automatic bitbake function library dependency code has also merged and is active. This should let us migrate class code to become library code for performance improvements.
  • A bug in the layer.conf variable changes was identified which was causing re-parsing when it wasn’t necessary. A fix has been merged to address that.
  • The OE TSC decided in favour of adding export flag expansion despite the performance impact so that patch will be queued.
  • We merged a number of neat rust improvements which add on target cargo support and added automated QA tests for this functionality so we can ensure it continues to work and doesn’t regress. Thanks Alex Kiernan, we hope to see more series like this one!
  • CVE levels in master have improved but still need a little work
  • The autobuilder maintenance window is moving from Friday to Monday.
  • We have a growing number of bugs in bugzilla, any help with them is appreciated.
