Yocto Project Weekly Status October 11th, 2022

Current Dev Position: YP 4.1 M4 (In QA)
Next Deadline: 28th October 2022 YP 4.1 Release br/>

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • Richard Purdie is actually on holiday and expects to return on the 24th October.
  • Patches for master are welcome on the mailing list and will be reviewed/tested, but will not be merged until RP has returned.
  • YP 4.1 rc2 is now out of QA and will be reviewed by the TSC later today. Release is scheduled for the 28th but may happen earlier if the documentation is finalized.
  • A bug related to the Extensible SDK has been found in YP 4.1 but this is potentially not a release blocker, and can be fixed in the first point release.
  • Steve Sakoman to maintain Langdale (YP 4.1 - not an LTS)
  • At release we released the core layer was still advertising kirkstone so this was removed. This did mean some simple changes were needed to layers to mark compatibility with the new release, we’ll aim to do this earlier in the next release.
  • YP 3.1.20 rc2 has been built and is in QA now.
  • YP 4.2 Proposed Timeline document is at: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1X5KM_3BiEsIrHBO93ULvYHQJ72NqS5U5jjwWo5bxTiY/edit?usp=sharing
  • Help is very much welcome in trying to resolve our autobuilder intermittent issues. You can see the list of failures we’re continuing to see by searching for the “AB-INT” tag in bugzilla: https://bugzilla.yoctoproject.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=AB-INT. In particular there is a long-standing qemuppc failure which needs investigating (https://bugzilla.yoctoproject.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14824)

Yocto Project Weekly Status October 4th, 2022

Current Dev Position: YP 4.1 M4 (In QA)
Next Deadline: 28th October 2022 YP 4.1 Release br/>

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.1 rc2 is now in QA
  • Richard will not be around for the next two weeks. With 4.1 rc2 in QA for the next week, things should be quiet and the TSC can then decide on whether to release or if an rc3 is needed for any reason. Alexandre/Luca will test/queue patches during this time, patches are not expected to merge. Ross is around and should be able to cover most other things if/as needed.
  • At release we released the core layer was still advertising kirkstone so this was removed. This did mean some simple changes were needed to layers to mark compatibility with the new release, we’ll aim to do this earlier in the next release.

Yocto Project Weekly Status September 27th, 2022

Current Dev Position: YP 4.1 M4
Next Deadline: 3rd October 2022 YP 4.1 M4 Build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.1 M3 was released
  • YP 4.0.4 was released
  • We’re seeing good improvements in the CVE counts, thanks to all who have been contributing.
  • For 4.1 final release (officially due to build next Monday), things do seem to have been stabilizing and we have resolved or are close to resolving the critical issues we have the capacity to resolve. Before we end up with more CVEs or more bug reports, we’re therefore aiming to go ahead with the release ASAP. As such, if anyone has things they think should block release, please let us know.
  • After the release build Richard is planning to disappear for a couple of weeks so things will slow down accordingly.
  • A tool, used for collaboration on the creation of release notes, git-refinery-web has been made publicly available by Intel, thanks! We may not be able to use it for 4.1 due to the timescales but the hope is to use it in the future for collaboratively creating the release notes.
  • Help is very much welcome in trying to resolve our autobuilder intermittent issues. You can see the list of failures we’re continuing to see by searching for the “AB-INT” tag in bugzilla: https://bugzilla.yoctoproject.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=AB-INT

Yocto Project Weekly Status September 20th, 2022

Current Dev Position: YP 4.1 M4
Next Deadline: 3rd October 2022 YP 4.1 M4 Build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • 4.1 M3 rc2 passed QA except for one issue from M2 we believed fixed but which isn’t.. We’ll likely aim to fix that in M4 and release rc2 for M3 (pending TSC approval).
  • Last week was quieter as many people were in Dublin for ELC-E. Thanks in particular to all who presented or otherwise helped with the booth or other events there.
  • We’ve seen a good reduction in CVEs in dunfell and kirkstone but master is still concerning. A number of the CVEs there have been reported for version constraint issues to NIST.

Yocto Project Weekly Status September 13th, 2022

Current Dev Position: YP 4.1 M4
Next Deadline: 3rd October 2022 YP 4.1 M4 Build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.1 M3 rc2 is in QA
  • YP 4.1 M3 rc1 was abandoned after it failed to build due to a number of intermittent issues including:
    • virtio block device issues in qemu we’re hoping are fixed in qemu 7.1.0
    • debuginfod host contamination
    • recurrence of the libgcrypt ptest issues
    • problems with the fetcher race fix

Thanks to everyone who helped debug and/or fix these.

  • Builds are now running more reliably on the autobuilder but we’re still seeing some timeout issues
  • CVE counts are high on all branches at present. Steve Sakoman has kindly put some encouragement in place for those helping dunfell with CVE issues, see the mailing list for details.

Yocto Project Weekly Status September 6th, 2022

Current Dev Position: YP 4.1 M3 (Feature Freeze)
Next Deadline: 22nd August 2022 YP 4.1 M3 Build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • We are now at feature freeze for 4.1 but M3 has not been built yet.
  • Many of the blocking issues for M3 have been resolved including:
    • perl build hangs
    • cve-check database issues
    • hash-equiv file not found issues on local domain sockets
    • layer setup changes merged
    • rust upgrade merged
    • libgcrypt ptest issues on ARM is potentially fixed
    • llvm build path corruption in mesa was resolved
    • rust ppc patch was revised
    • llvm-config handling in core was reworked
    • nativesdk-gcc issue breaking rust SDK tests was identified and fixed
    • a checksum mismatch race issue in bitbake’s fetcher code was fixed
  • Thanks to everyone who helped work on and resolve these, it will significantly improve the release and autobuilder stability during testing.
  • There is still an issue with rust SDK failures on ubuntu1804 to resolve before M3 can build
  • The rust selftest changes are looking unlikely to merge as they don’t pass during testing yet and one of the precursor patches causes buildpath issues. Some precursor patches did merge.

Yocto Project Weekly Status August 23rd, 2022

Current Dev Position: YP 4.1 M3 (Feature Freeze)
Next Deadline: 22nd August 2022 YP 4.1 M3 Build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.0.3 was released
  • YP 3.1.19 has been built and is in QA
  • We are now at feature freeze for 4.1.
  • The 4.1 build is planned as soon as we resolve the status of some pending patches. The known remaining issues are the rust automated tests, layer setup changes and gcc and rust version upgrades. We also need to fix some autobuilder errors such as the llvm reproducibility issue with mesa.
  • Several patch series have been problematic in the last week which has put strain on our infrastructure, particularly the binutils upgrade.
  • The CVE count for master rose sharply again this week due to multiple issues in vim and tiff. The vim issues have been patched, tiff hasn’t as yet.
  • We have seen a sharp rise in the number of patches in OE-Core, particularly related to changes in new clang versions. Many of these have been submitted upstream and/or have good reasons for being present but we need to continue to work to reduce our patch burden.

Yocto Project Weekly Status August 16th, 2022

Current Dev Position: YP 4.1 M3
Next Deadline: 22nd August 2022 YP 4.1 M3 Build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.0.3 has been through QA with a clean report and is likely to be released
  • The CVE count for master rose sharply this week but a number of fixes were sent by Khem, thanks!
  • Bitbake changes in class handling merged which means classes can now be enforced to be in “global” or “recipe” scope. This handles a long standing usability issue of it not being clear which scope classes should be used in. For example, “testimage” now needs to be included via IMAGE_CLASSES and not via INHERIT. Global class inclusions in recipes such as “base” and “package” will now show a parsing error. “base” was particularly pointless and can simply be removed as it was always inherited.
  • The rust toolchain changes merged and are now being tested by default on the autobuilder but there is one intermittent issue with shebang length overflow in the SDK which still needs to be resolved
  • We upgraded glibc to 2.36 and produced a new uninative version which supports this.
  • There are patches out for review for the debug path improvements. These rely on a gcc patch and small change of gcc behavior which is being discussed with upstream.
  • There were cleanups to copyright and license headers in OE-Core and Bitbake.
  • “largefile” support in oe-core was cleaned up and removed as we assume this everywhere now, completing something we said would happen in release notes a few years ago.

Yocto Project Weekly Status August 9th, 2022

Current Dev Position: YP 4.1 M3
Next Deadline: 22nd August 2022 YP 4.1 M3 Build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 3.1.18 was released
  • YP 4.0.3 is due to build this week but we need the glibc and kernel reproducibility fixes first
  • Major changes to the rust toolchain build process were merged and this enables target rust, cross SDK and automated SDK testing. Sadly some issues remain and are stopping enabling the tests by default.
  • We have finally tracked down and worked out a fix for the kernel reproducibility issue which appeared in recent 5.15 stable updates. It was a config option which changed depending on whether /bin/sh was dash or bash.
  • The 5.19 kernel uprev is nearly ready to merge as the final build issues look to have been addressed.
  • The base glibc 2.36 patches have merged but not the actual upgrade yet.
  • We had some infrastructure issues over the weekend which impacted the autobuilder. Combined with a number of complex patch submissions, this has meant there are patches backlogged.
  • A number of new CVEs appeared in master this week so help would be much appreciated in addressing those.
  • The debug file mapping issues are stalled due to developer bandwidth limitations.

Yocto Project Weekly Status August 2nd, 2022

Current Dev Position: YP 4.1 M3
Next Deadline: 22nd August 2022 YP 4.1 M3 Build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.1 M2 was released
  • YP 3.1.18 passed QA and is due to be released
  • The debug file mapping issues have moved slightly further forward thanks to some help from Ross but are stalling due to insufficient developer time available to resolve the issues.
  • Some rust toolchain improvements did merge, including an automated rust toolchain test. The bulk of the rework is stalled on a handful of remaining issues, particularly a couple of reproducibility problems but also a mips n32 toolchain issue.
  • We have one open CVE on master against qemu, help to backport that fix would be very welcome to keep the numbers down. CVEs in kirkstone (LTS) significantly reduced.
  • Some development workflow changes around the eSDK workflow merged. There are also some layer workflow patches still pending review.

Yocto Project Weekly Status July 26th, 2022

Current Dev Position: YP 4.1 M3
Next Deadline: 22nd August 2022 YP 4.1 M3 Build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.1 M2 is due to be released with one known issue
  • YP 3.1.18 is entering QA
  • There were further issues with debug file mapping discovered in master. Unfortunately to fix this we’d need to move away from the relative path calls to configure in autotools and this causes a ton of new buildpath warnings. There doesn’t seem much interest in fixing these kinds of issues and to move things forward help would be needed here.
  • There is a patch to rework the rust toolchain support into something which has tests and working cross build support. Whilst this actually builds and tests on the autobuilder properly (an improvement on the existing code), help would be needed in chasing down the remaining failures/warnings and any regressions from the patch.
  • We are managing to stay roughly on track with upstream updates and CVE fixing.

  • Last week there seemed to be a large number of autobuilder issues including many non-deterministic dependencies for qemu, as well as a lot of intermittent buildpaths issues. These have now mostly been resolved.
  • The help received in resolving buildpaths issues was appreciated, particularly with the kernel where we seemed to uncover several unexpectedly.
  • We have enabled buildpaths in WARN_QA by default. This takes our reproducibility to a new level but there is some fallout in layers which will need to be fixed.
  • meta-gplv2 builds have been dropped from master and the layer will no longer be maintained.
  • We’ve noticed that debug information is still not being processed by package.bbclass entirely correctly and it is missing a large chunk of the kernel sources for example. RP is trying to debug this.
  • There are continued reports of issues with the rust SDK compiler. Sadly we just have patches to make x86_64 work rather than getting to the root of the issues and cross compile it correctly, which is a concern.
  • Work is continuing on the /proc/pressure monitoring code. Initial averaging wasn’t working so well but we have an improved approach which seems to regulate builds better.

Yocto Project Weekly Status July 12th, 2022

Current Dev Position: YP 4.1 M2
Next Deadline: 11th July 2022 YP 4.1 M2 Build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.1 M2 is due to build this week.
  • YP 4.0.2 was released.
  • We have fixes in place for most of the reproducible build issues so will enable the buildpaths QA test by default soon once the remaining tweaks have merged. This will allow much easier visibility into reproducibility issues in people’s builds
  • meta-gplv2 builds have been dropped from master and the layer will no longer be maintained.
  • An issue has been identified where libstdc++ is broken when built with the gold linker due to patch changes that changed the build process in kirkstone.
  • Systemd is going to require usrmerge in the future. The proposed patch to require that distro feature will break our autobuilder configuration as things stand so work will be needed to try and adapt to the direction from upstream.
  • Recent changes to package.bbclass for externalsrc handling have broken source and license handling for the kernel, highlighting the need to better tests there. We don’t have a fix as yet.
  • There have been further proposed patches around improving the eSDK tooling workflows and around layer setup.
  • Work is continuing on the /proc/pressure monitoring code.

Yocto Project Weekly Status July 5th, 2022

Current Dev Position: YP 4.1 M2
Next Deadline: 11th July 2022 YP 4.1 M2 Build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • Next week M2 is due to build so if anyone has changes for that milestone, please send ASAP.
  • YP 4.0.2 has been through QA and is likely to be released in the next few days.
  • A reproducibility issue was identified and raised a question on whether we could enable an old QA check for these kinds of issues (‘buildpaths’ in insane.bbclass). Some bugs were fixed in the test but is has highlighted several reproducibility issues. Some have been fixed but others remain:
    • docs issues in lib32-vala, rpm, lib32-gtk-doc, vala, gtk-doc
    • musl issue in ltp
    • multilib issues in lib32-vala, vala, rpm (may overlap docs)
    • qemuarm64 kernel-devsrc issue (Bruce looking into)
    • meta-virt issues in xen-tools (Christopher looking into)
    • meta-gplv2 issues in mc, tar
    • lttng-modules .debug issue on beaglebone, edgerouter, and qemumips
  • Fixing these will allow us to enable buildpaths by default which should allow more people to spot reproducibility issues.
  • There is a discussion about layer setup tooling in the bitbake-layers discussion on the OE-Core list, input is welcome from those with an interest in this.
  • There is also a RFC series about improving the eSDK tooling workflows from Alex Kanavin which may be of interest.
  • Code to monitor the /proc/pressure interface has been added and there is a patch to optionally allow bitbake to reduce the number of processes running depending on system load, which it is hoped may help some of our autobuilder intermittent issues (thanks Aryaman and Randy).

Yocto Project Weekly Status June 28th, 2022

Current Dev Position: YP 4.1 M2
Next Deadline: 11th July 2022 YP 4.1 M2 Build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.0.2 is due to build this week however we want to fix one bitbake logging regression first.
  • A fix has been merged for a logging regression found in bitbake where the first message to the console during parsing would be shown but subsequent ones would not.
  • Fedora 36 is causing problems on the autobuilder since it drops support for the scp protocol requiring sftp on target instead to exchange files. Dropbear does not have sftp support. We need scp to perform several of our image tests. We can add sftp to both dropbear and openssh images however that then causes dev-pkg conflicts since openssh and dropbear cannot be installed at the same time but are pulled in by openssh-dev and dropbear-dev.
  • As such we’re proposing to change -dev package dependencies to become rrecommends instead of rdepends. This does radically change the contents of some images but in a way which is much more correct.
  • There is a potential follow up change to change injected symlink dependencies from rdepends to rrecommends as well, which reduces the delta of “dev-pkg” featured images even more.
  • There are also problems in the cve-check selftests causing other build failures.
  • Various npm fixes were merged, thanks Enrico.
  • There are problems with rust-cross-canadian, it has never worked correctly for the full set of different targets cross-canadian might be set to. Help to fix that would be much appreciated.

Yocto Project Weekly Status June 21st, 2022

Current Dev Position: YP 4.1 M2
Next Deadline: 11th July 2022 YP 4.1 M2 Build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 3.1.17 was released
  • We’ve taken a decision to remove the versions from the sstate feeds so one sstate url now applies for all project active releases. This simplifies the user interface to that data and also makes it easier to mirror too.
  • Older data on the sstate mirror will age out over time if that data isn’t used on the autobuilder. This should mean the most active/useful data is shared.
  • It was generally a quiet week otherwise with various recipe upgrades.

Current Dev Position: YP 4.1 M2
Next Deadline: 11th July 2022 YP 4.1 M2 Build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.1 M1 was released
  • YP 3.1.17 rc2 is due to be released (fixed for the openssl ptest issue are queued)
  • We’re taking normal development work, recipe upgrades, bug fixes and so on, nothing too major to report.
  • Patch metrics are in a reasonable position thanks to continued and sustained work over time to try and control the level and status of patches in OE-Core.
  • WDD is also lower than it has been for a while, thanks to bugzilla cleanup and issues being addressed by a number of people.
  • At the risk of sounding like a stuck record, we continue to see intermittent autobuilder failures which result in a need to retry builds. This is a significant concern and uses up a lot of time/resources to try and investigate and fix.

Yocto Project Weekly Status June 7th, 2022

Current Dev Position: YP 4.1 M2
Next Deadline: 11th July 2022 YP 4.1 M2 Build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.1 M1 was built and been through QA with one kernel issue raised. We will likely release and fix this for M2, pending TSC approval.
  • YP 3.1.17 rc1 was built but failed on the autobuilder, partly due to infrastructure issues but also failing ptests in openssl, likely due to expired certificates. As of writing, rc2 is building after infrastructure fixes but the ptest fixes were insufficient. If there are no other issues we will aim to release rc2 and fix the openssl ptest regressions for 3.1.18 pending TSC approval.
  • Patches have continued to merge into master but have been slowed down by various intermittent issues showing up on the autobuilder:
    • We have bumped the minimum make version for the project and added a make-native dependency for perl to avoid bugs in old make 4.1 versions (particularly on ubuntu 18.04).
    • There are some fixes for potential deadlock issues in the bitbake UI on the bitbake list for review
    • We also have some tweaks to the wget fetcher to allow infrastructure mirror races to be avoided.

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.1 M1 is due to build imminently.
  • CVE trend charting was added to the metrics output from the autobuilder: https://autobuilder.yocto.io/pub/non-release/patchmetrics/
  • An issue where failures occurred when upgrading python recipes in an existing build directory was tracked down to issues with ordering of files on disk. This has been resolved and also been made deterministic although we do need to raise the issue with upstream python.
  • There is a new ncurses UI for “taskexp” our task dependency explorer thanks to David Reyna. Patches are on the bitbake mailing list.

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 4.0.1 was released
  • YP 4.1 M1 is due to build next week.
  • The Yocto Project Virtual Summit and OpenEmbedded Virtual Developer Meeting both seemed to go well, many good presentations, demos and good discussion. Thanks to everyone who helped organize it or attended.
  • There are some prototype scripts updating patchwork patch status for OpenEmbedded-Core and BitBake which is covering about 75% of the patches to the merged state along with revision information: https://patchwork.yoctoproject.org/project/oe-core/list/
  • We have added a new “metrics” target on the autobuilder. This currently has some simple patch status tracking information and can generate a history graph but the hope is to extend this to CVE metrics and likely other things. If anyone has interest in helping here, please let Richard know. https://autobuilder.yocto.io/pub/non-release/patchmetrics/
  • There are some known cve-check issues on kirkstone and dunfell, patches addressing those issues are in testing.

Yocto Project Weekly Status May. 17th, 2022

Current Dev Position: YP 4.1 M1
Next Deadline: 30th May 2022 YP 4.1 M1 Build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 3.4.4 released
  • YP 4.0.1 was built and is in QA
  • We’re coming up to 4.1 M1 at the end of the month which is a good point to aim for early testing of changes in the next release.
  • There are some prototype scripts updating patchwork patch status for OpenEmbedded-Core and BitBake which is covering about 75% of the patches to the merged state along with revision information: https://patchwork.yoctoproject.org/project/oe-core/list/ We’re hoping to extend this to other status information such as in master-next for testing but it is a work in progress. Let us know if you find this useful. With some manual work to clear the backlog of patches we could aim to keep it more up to date (there is an archive status we could use for that too).
  • We have added a new “metrics” target on the autobuilder. This currently has some simple patch status tracking information and can generate a history graph but the hope is to extend this to CVE metrics and likely other things. If anyone has interest in helping here, please let Richard know.

Current Dev Position: YP 4.0 rc3
Next Deadline: 29th April 2022 YP 4.0 final release

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • The next release, kirkstone will be 4.0 (previously known as 3.5) and will be bitbake 2.0 based.
  • The YP 4.0 (3.5) is due to release pending final checks on documentation and release notes.
  • YP 3.3.6 has passed QA and pending TSC approval for release
  • YP 3.1.16 has been built and entering QA
  • There is a major issue from a recent CVE fix to git which is making it’s way into various distros and causes problems when git is used from a fakeroot environment. We use git from the host so we are exposed to the issue. There are several patches attempting to fix this, the initial fixes in master were not quite enough unfortunately.
  • Performance workers on the autobuilder have been replaced with new alma8 and debian 11 systems. The previous centos7 and ubuntu1604 systems completed over 5800 builds each!
  • Master has started taking new patches but the git issue above is impeding testing.

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • The next release, kirkstone will be 4.0 (previously known as 3.5) and will be bitbake 2.0 based.
  • The first release candidate build for YP 4.0 (3.5) is in QA but has at least one issue which will mean we need a second release candidate build. We will build that after the final QA report is back.
  • YP 3.3.6, the final hardknott release will build after 4.0 rc2.
  • There are several issues which have arisen in the last week which mean we will need a second release candidate build:
    • edgerouter didn’t boot with rc1 due to a kernel patch issue
    • uninative didn’t work with libstdc++ from gcc 12 so we have an upgraded version
    • there were several CVE fixes that came in (libarchive, gzip, xz)
    • a key intermittent autobuilder fix was identified.

Not all of these were release blockers but together they mean an rc2 is appropriate.

  • If anyone is aware of other issues in rc1 that need to be addressed in rc2, please let us know ASAP.

Yocto Project Weekly Status Apr. 5th, 2022

Current Dev Position: YP 3.5 M4
Next Deadline: 4th Apr. 2022 YP 3.5 M4 build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • We will build the first release candidate build for YP 4.0 (3.5) later today.
  • YP 3.4.3 was released
  • YP 3.3.6, the final hardknott release will build after 4.0 rc1.
  • We’re planning to take a couple of further changes (pseudo fix, apt signing minus the test and the unwind sdl workaround) and then call the first release candidate build good.
  • There were a number of good fixes for memory resident bitbake this week and also some interesting and useful fixes for the bitbake parsing process which should avoid lockups in the error case. The hope is these should avoid some of the intermittent issues we’ve been seeing on the autobuilder.
  • An issue with make 4.2.1 on some distros remains, often causing hangs in kernel and perl builds in particular. Help in developing a workaround for this (a make buildtools tarball?) would be appreciated.
  • YP 4.1 planning document is available for review at: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-g7DatSdmIETwD3xFSCxV7MbWVVkpQvQ788mIr1MPTI/edit?usp=sharing
  • If people see intermittent issues in their own builds, particularly if they’re the same as intermittent issues seen on the autobuilder, please do comment in the bugs mentioning when they happen as the frequency information does help us prioritize fixing the most common issues.
  • Intermittent issues continue to be at high levels and help is very much welcome in trying to resolve them. You can see the list of failures we’re continuing to see by searching for the “AB-INT” tag in bugzilla: https://bugzilla.yoctoproject.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=AB-INT We did work out the cause of the infamous tinfoil wait_event intermittent issue.

Yocto Project Weekly Status Mar. 29th, 2022

Current Dev Position: YP 3.5 M4
Next Deadline: 4th Apr. 2022 YP 3.5 M4 build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • The first release candidate build for YP 4.0 (3.5) is due next week (Monday, 4th April)
  • YP 3.1.15 was released
  • YP 3.4.3 has passed QA and likely to be released imminently
  • We’re calming down the number of changes going into the release at this point including upgrades. For example the recent go uprev is very unlikely to make it in at this point. If there are patches you think should be in the release, please comment on them to show support.
  • We were able to isolate one parsing process lockup which ideally we’d fix in the release but it is unclear if the fixes will be ready.
  • YP 4.1 planning document is available for review at: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1-g7DatSdmIETwD3xFSCxV7MbWVVkpQvQ788mIr1MPTI/edit?usp=sharing
  • Improvements to the documentation version number handling were made, making things easier for release engineering and general maintenance. It should also improve the items in the switcher dropdown menu, Please report any issues anyone spots with the docs.
  • If people see intermittent issues in their own builds, particularly if they’re the same as intermittent issues seen on the autobuilder, please do comment in the bugs mentioning when they happen as the frequency information does help us prioritize fixing the most common issues.

Yocto Project Weekly Status Mar. 22nd, 2022

Current Dev Position: YP 3.5 M4
Next Deadline: 4th Apr. 2022 YP 3.5 M4 build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 3.1.15 is due to be released
  • YP 3.4.3 is due to build
  • We decided to merge in a number of python recipes which allow us to build the sphinx documentation. These are used by our documentation build process and many of the dependencies were things which likely should have been in core anyway.
  • There was a small performance tweak to bitbake’s codeparser cache code which seems to show around a 10% parsing speed improvement
  • We have continued to take other minimal impact upgrades and this is having a positive impact on CVE numbers. We are looking likely to take the recently released libtool 2.4.7 since this is similar to 2.4.6 but keeps us current with upstream. Some recipes may need to clear out stale libtool m4 macros if version mismatch errors are seen.
  • Toaster has seen further fixes and should be ready for release.
  • The AVAILABLE_LICENSES variable was removed since it has parsing overhead, had bad implications for task hashes and is no longer needed by any of the core code.
  • Some changes are being proposed to the documentation build process which should make version handling in releases easier and less error prone.

15th, 2022

Current Dev Position: YP 3.5 M4
Next Deadline: 4th Apr. 2022 YP 3.5 M4 build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 3.5 M3 has been released.
  • YP 3.1.15 is now in QA
  • There are patches proposed to move python3-cryptography to OE-Core from meta-oe/meta-python. It is late in the cycle but the current location is causing issues for several layers and it appears to be the right thing to do before kirkstone is released.
  • There is a proposal to switch from pip to installer to handle installation of python modules. With some development, the path becomes clear in hindsight and this is another change where it seems to make sense to do it now.
  • Other than the above, we should be seeing the recent python changes settling down.
  • There were some tweaks to the tasks display in knotty merged.
  • We took an upgrade to mesa 22 which drops dri1 support on the basis it stands the release in a better long term position.
  • We have continued to take other minimal impact upgrades and this is having a positive impact on CVE numbers.
  • Toaster has seen a number of fixes recently and should be in a stronger position for release with a move to an LTS django version, thanks Tim and David.
  • Help in completing the migration documentation would be much appreciated.

8th, 2022

Current Dev Position: YP 3.5 M4
Next Deadline: 4th Apr. 2022 YP 3.5 M4 build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 3.3.5 has been released.
  • YP 3.5 M3 is now in QA
  • All of the known disruptive changes for 3.5 should now be merged and we’re looking at stabilizing up to release in around 4 weeks.
  • We do plan to experiment a little with M4 in this cycle by taking low risk upgrades before release as this does tend to help improve the baseline versions in the final release and help reduce our security exposure. Experience shows issues tend to be introduced by feature changes and potentially other code improvements rather than recipe upgrades and that the autobuilder testing generally does a good job of evaluating upgrades.
  • Help in completing the migration documentation would be much appreciated.

1st, 2022

Current Dev Position: YP 3.5 M4
Next Deadline: 4th Apr. 2022 YP 3.5 M4 build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • We are now at feature freeze for 3.5, our next LTS release
  • YP 3.3.5 is out of QA and pending release approval
  • Inclusive language changes have merged however there are still:
    • Incompatible license related variable changes
    • Function variable name changes needed
    • No migration documentation or documentation of the changes
    • No documentation of the bitbake rename code
    • No updates to the manual for the variable renames

We do need people to pull things together and finish things off, help in doing that is needed and much appreciated.

  • There is a pending patch to warn about old style license identifiers pending in master-next and due to be posted for review. On balance this is probably a good thing to get into the LTS but we’re open to input on that.
  • The incompatible license changes will mean anyone using those variables will need to update what they’re doing carefully. Patches in master-next now pass testing and are due to be posted on the mailing list.
  • The python build process change to use wheels has merged. That change has caused some disruption but was close enough to being ready it seemed worth making the final push for inclusion.
  • The infrastructure move was successful and all services should be restored. There are some networking issues occurring on autobuilder builds which are preventing release builds at this time and are being looked into.
  • As such, the M3 release build will likely happen late this week or early next week.
  • If people see intermittent issues in their own builds, particularly if they’re the same as intermittent issues seen on the autobuilder, please do comment in the bugs mentioning when they happen as the frequency information does help us prioritize fixing the most common issues.

Yocto Project Weekly Status Feb. 22nd, 2022

Current Dev Position: YP 3.5 M4
Next Deadline: 4th Apr. 2022 YP 3.5 M4 build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • We are now at feature freeze for 3.5, our next LTS release
  • YP 3.1.14 and YP 3.2.4 were released
  • YP 3.3.5 is in QA
  • After a last minute push, the base set of inclusive language changes have merged. There is a conversion script which can be run to convert layers. Not all changes needed have been written yet but enough are present to allow the conversion process to start.
  • There were also changes to convert LICENSE fields to use SPDX identifiers and there is a second conversion script for this that can be used.
  • We have updated the core layer series name to kirkstone and other layers will now need to update to confirm compatibility with kirkstone.
  • There is a patchset to update python’s build processes to use the upstream preferred wheel approach which would aid support of python over the next few years. It is late in the cycle for this kind of change but we will give this series a few days of testing to make a decision and welcome user feedback either way on these changes.
  • As such, the M3 release build will likely not happen until early next week.
  • The autobuilder infrastructure is planned to be offline 26-28th February for a data center move. Public services like the website, wiki and git servers will remain live but the git backend (push.yoctoproject.org) will be offline, as will the downloads and sstate services and the autobuilder/NAS.
  • Capacity has been improved on the sstate server which was causing intermittent timeout issues for downloads.
  • Intermittent issues continue to be at record high levels and help is very much welcome in trying to resolve them. You can see the list of failures we’re continuing to see by searching for the “AB-INT” tag in bugzilla: https://bugzilla.yoctoproject.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=AB-INT In particular, we’re struggling to understand the intermittent network issue with external hosts we’re seeing very occasionally.

Yocto Project Weekly Status Feb. 15th, 2022

Current Dev Position: YP 3.5 M3
Next Deadline: 21th Feb. 2022 YP 3.5 M3 build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • Next week is feature freeze for 3.5, our next LTS release
  • YP 3.1.14 passed QA and is due to be released
  • YP 3.2.4 rc2 is in QA (rc1 had sstate networking issues)
  • We’re extremely worried about the inclusive language changes since these are not anywhere near ready and the freeze deadline is in days. This is an important topic but sadly we’re simply starved of people with the right time and skills to spend on it. There is an email on the openembedded-architecture list about this.
  • The autobuilder infrastructure is planned to be offline 26-28th February for a data center move. Public services like the website, wiki and git servers will remain live but the git backend (push.yoctoproject.org) will be offline, as will the downloads and sstate services and the autobuilder/NAS.
  • We’ve upgraded to the new glibc version and have patches in testing for the new binutils release assuming some minor issues there are resolved.
  • There are changes proposed to the bitbake git fetcher handling of tags. We resolve these against the upstream repositories and the caching of the values was showing issues such as network accesses in the unpack task. We advice against using tags due to the potential for them to change, any layers using them may seen error messages depending on whether their usage is problematic.
  • Intermittent issues continue to be at record high levels and help is very much welcome in trying to resolve them. Yocto Project Weekly Status Feb. 8th, 2022

Current Dev Position: YP 3.5 M3
Next Deadline: 21th Feb. 2022 YP 3.5 M3 build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 3.5 M2 has been released.
  • YP 3.1.14 is undergoing QA aiming for release later this week
  • We plan to remove our centos8 autobuilder workers (using stream) since there are regressions being introduced to the distro which aren’t being actively fixed quickly enough for the needs of the autobuilder (e.g. the ability of normal users to use ping). We can’t really recommend this as a build distro for that reason. The alma8 workers are looking more stable and will remain.
  • We are seeing a potential hang issue with make 4.2.1 where kernel or perl builds hang (seen on stream and opensuse 15.3), help/insight in debugging that would be very welcome.
  • Prelink support was removed from master due to it’s planned removal from glibc 2.36.
  • The glibc 2.35 upgrade is blocked on resolving a couple of issues, one test failing using buildtools and another in multilib builds having overlapping files.
  • A new Patchwork is available at https://patchwork.yoctoproject.org/. This new system is running the up to date mainline code and will receive regular updates. The previous unmaintained fork remains up at https://patchwork.openembedded.org/ to preserve history. We are seeking help updating PatchTest to run with the new version. Everyone can now sign up for an account on the new system. Patchwork project maintainers please email mhalstead@linuxfoundation.org to have your access restored.

Yocto Project Weekly Status Feb. 1st, 2022

Current Dev Position: YP 3.5 M3
Next Deadline: 21th Feb. 2022 YP 3.5 M3 build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 3.5 M2 has passed QA with one bug highlighted (14708). Due to vacations in Asia the release, if approved, will be made next week.
  • YP 3.1.14 is ready for QA but the release will also be delayed until next week.
  • Upstream glibc are now planning to remove prelink support in 2.36. I think we will still want to remove prelink from OE-Core before our next release though, particularly as it is an LTS.
  • An email proposing inclusive language changes for bitbake and OE-Core has been sent to the community for review. The aim is to implement this before M3.
  • We are seeing networking issues during image testing on the centos8/stream8 workers, possibly due to recent changes in the distro. Help with debugging this welcome.
  • We have also realized there is an issue with hash equivalence where the current mechanism will not account for different headers inside the sysroot added through indirect dependencies (e.g. linux-libc-headers via glibc). This means something like rtcwake in util-linux which uses rtc.h can have differing debug symbols due to differing line numbers yet otherwise be identical. There is a potential fix with downsides in master-next.
  • CVE metrics are still under control for master with pending patches accounted for (thanks Ross!) but work still remains on the various stable branches which have high counts.

Yocto Project Weekly Status Jan. 25th, 2022

Current Dev Position: YP 3.5 M3
Next Deadline: 21th Feb. 2022 YP 3.5 M3 build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 3.5 M2 finally built today after a number of autobuilder build issues and is now in QA
  • Building M2 was fairly painful as various sstate error/warning code paths were exposed in release builds, there were some infrastructure issues, some test reporting bugs and other bugs like that in systemtap on arm and a reproducibility issue, all of which combined to break the release builds in different ways. Hopefully most of these are now addressed or in the process of being fixed/tested.
  • Upstream glibc are planning to remove prelink support in 2.35 with patches proposed on their mailing list.https://sourceware.org/pipermail/libc-alpha/2022-January/135565.html The project is unlikely to be able to continue to maintain any prelink support once this happens and we will therefore remove our prelink support before the next LTS unless the situation changes and maintainers step forward.
  • An email proposing inclusive language changes https://lists.openembedded.org/g/openembedded-core/message/160881 for bitbake and OE-Core has been sent to the community for review. The aim is to implement this before M3.
  • The debian9 autobuilder issues were hardware related and fixes for the arm systemtap issues are being tested but autobuilder intermittent issues are still at an all time high.
  • CVE metrics improved for master https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vRgNISmH0Ditf0bRtSezeR2XsgKIiSFJKF6KJUHpnzocNGzvKZbuSDKfmV3n64BFXDRqElBSJnhHtG4/pubchart?oid=1993375488&format=interactive but work still remains on the various stable branches which have high counts.
  • Intermittent issues continue to be at record high levels and help is very much welcome in trying to resolve them. You can see the list of failures we’re continuing to see by searching for the “AB-INT” tag in bugzilla: https://bugzilla.yoctoproject.org/buglist.cgi?quicksearch=AB-INT

Yocto Project Weekly Status Jan. 18th, 2022

Current Dev Position: YP 3.5 M2
Next Deadline: 17th Jan. 2022 YP 3.5 M2 build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 3.5 M2 is due to build this week
  • Work has progressed on inclusive language and an email should be out this week about the proposals for that after discussions amongst the volunteers who stepped up to work on it. Some obsolete variables/code have already been removed as a prelude to this.
  • Patches to switch to setuptools and away from distutils following upstream python’s lead have merered (thanks Tim!). Whilst the issues are resolved for core, work remains on other layers such as meta-oe.
  • The autobuilder does look improved from an intermittent failure perspective but we’re seeing hangs for unknown reasons on debian9 oe-selftest (seems python pthread mutex related) and on ltp on the arm worker. Sadly the open issues are at an all time high.
  • Patches to disable the network outside of do_fetch have merged.
  • Support for improved SPDX info for the kernel has merged (thanks Saul).
  • CVE issues had a bad week with further significant increases for master and stable branches. Some patches have merged to improve master (thanks Ross!).

11th, 2022

Current Dev Position: YP 3.5 M2
Next Deadline: 17th Jan. 2022 YP 3.5 M2 build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 3.5 M2 is due to build next week
  • The autobuilder updates have now mostly stabilized and we are potentially seeing a reduction in intermittent failures.
  • On modern kernels, we now have the capability within bitbake to disable networking on a per task basis without extra user privileges. There is discussion on the mailing list on how we should enable this and whether it should be on an opt-in or opt-out basis. A second patchset has been proposed for discussion where tasks using the network would need to be explicitly marked as such.
  • The openssl and webkit reproducibility issues have been fixed.
  • We have also fixed the reproducibility issues with rust-llvm and golang. With ruby docs disabled, this means we have no reproducibility patch exclusions in OE-Core, thanks Alex Kanavin!
  • The “oldest kernel” setting used for qemu which is architecture specific is causing issues for allarch packages but the various patches to fix it have also caused other issues and highlighted gaps in our sstate hash tests. There are hopefully now patches ready to merge to fix these issues and the gaps in testing.
  • CVE issues against master have risen from 7 to 17 so help in addressing those issues would be very welcome.

4th, 2022

Current Dev Position: YP 3.5 M2
Next Deadline: 17th Jan. 2022 YP 3.5 M2 build

Next Team Meetings:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 3.5 M1 and YP 3.1.13 were released.
  • We have two weeks before the 3.5 M2 build.
  • The autobuilder has undergone significant changes. There are some not unexpected issues with the new distros now in use there such as python 3.12 deprecations which trigger warnings on Fedora 35. One of the workers does appear to have what is potentially a hardware issue and not all the workers have migrated to SSDs yet (about 50% so far) so there will be some further disruption as this takes place.
  • On modern kernels, we now have the capability within bitbake to disable networking on a per task basis without extra user privileges. There is discussion on the mailing list on how we should enable this and whether it should be on an opt-in or opt-out basis. There is a proof of concept patchset for the opt-out basis and some good arguments for and against the opt-in approach.
  • The new year triggered some reproducible build failures in openssl and webkit due to changing copyright years in the source files, which is a sign of how detailed our reproducibility tests are.
  • There is a patchset implementing reproducibility for go which is a welcome improvement and much less invasive than previous approaches.
