Yocto Project Weekly Status January 29, 2019

Current Dev Position: YP 2.7 M3
Next Deadline: YP 2.7 M3 Cutoff is Feb. 25, 2019

SWAT Team Rotation:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 2.6.1 should release this week. The transition to automated QA is raising some questions about test results but we’re working through those.
  • YP 2.7 M2 was built and is in QA and is 8% done. See: https://wiki.yoctoproject.org/wiki/2.7_QA_Status
  • There have been a further round of gitsm fixes (and new test case additions). If anyone is seeing gitsm fetcher issues please report them. There are requests to backport these changes to the stable series. This has risks but people are reporting bugs there so is something we need to consider.
  • There has been little follow up from the last round of AUH patches. Please can maintainers work on this and get these submitted!
  • There has been little feedback on the proposed virtgl changes, these will likely merge as no discussion will be taken to mean there are no objections. This will have a performance impact.
  • There have been changes to the way the arm tunes are handled which merged after much discussion. The solution that merged should be safe and uncontroversial but if these do cause problems for anyone, please report ASAP.
  • We’re getting much improved results from our automated testing but these are highlighting a number of problems. There is an email about issues found in ptest. The biggest challenge here now is finding people able to step up and help improve things.

Planned Releases for YP 2.7:

  • YP 2.7 M2 is built and in QA.
  • YP 2.7 M2 Release Target is Feb. 1, 2019

  • YP 2.7 M3 Release Target is Mar. 8, 2019
  • YP 2.7 M4 Cutoff is Apr. 1, 2019
  • YP 2.7 M4 Release Target is Apr. 26, 2019

Planned upcoming dot releases:

  • YP 2.6.1 (Thud) will release shortly.
  • YP 2.5.3 (Sumo) will be targeted after YP 2.7 M2 is done.
  • YP 2.5.4 (Sumo) will be targeted after YP 2.7 M4 is done.
  • YP 2.6.2 (Thud) will be targeted after YP 2.5.4 is done.

  • YP 2.6.1 is out of QA and the QA results are being reviewed. See: https://wiki.yoctoproject.org/wiki/WW02_-_2019-01-09_-_Full_Test_Cycle_2.6.1_RC1
  • We have preliminary patches for the qemuarm migration to an armv7 machine. These haven’t passed testing and will need some improvements, particularly in the area of graphics support so will be deferred to M3 but it is great to see progress being made.
  • The qemu virtgl patchset is also making great progress in review/development but will also be deferred to M3.
  • We are now running the build performance tests as part of our standard autobuilder which is a further step towards streamlining our testing and release process. We are having some problems with the graphs that are generated in the emails. If anyone has experience or interest in helping with this (google charts in emails) we’d love to hear from you!
  • The perl changes which landed last week seem to have mostly been ok, there have been some race issues and we’re grateful to Alex and the perl-cross upstream for their fast turnaround on those.
  • Further fixes for the gitsm fetcher landed but there are still reports of issues. We continue to try and find ways to expand our test case matrix so we can fix the issues *and* ensure we don’t regress.
  • The latest round of updates from the AUH were sent out. Some have responded to this and sent in upgrades, many have not. If you are listed as a maintainer, please help us keep recipes up to date!

  • We merged the perl changes and version upgrade. This exposed some race issues but we’re hoping those have now been resolved. Thanks AlexK! This may cause fallout for perl module recipes in other layers.
  • There is a proposed patchset to add GL passthrough support for qemu, feedback on the proposals is welcome. There are build time performance implications, particularly due to the use of gtk3+-native.
  • There is a -dev kernel recipe for the Linux 5.0 kernel, thanks Bruce.

  • The hash equivalency server code merged, thanks to Joshua Watt for his patience in working through some of the details with that!
  • Many different patches for upgrades, features and fixes continue to be merged and we should be mostly up to date with incoming patches.
  • There do continue to be intermittent failures on the autobuilder, albeit at lower frequency than previously.
  • The cross-perl patchset from AlexK is building successfully on the autobuilder so others are requested to give feedback as its likely to merge soon based on the test results.

Next Deadline: YP 2.7 M1 Release Target is Dec. 21, 2018

SWAT Team Rotation:

Key Status/Updates:

  • YP 2.7 M1 is in QA and 100% complete. The final report should publish shortly. See: https://wiki.yoctoproject.org/wiki/2.7_QA_Status
  • YP 2.5.2 rc1 in the process of being released. The announcement should come shortly.
  • We realised the toolchain bootstrap process could be simplified with the removal of glibc-initial and gcc-cross-initial. There have been separate emails about this and despite the vacation period, Khem and RP believed them to be ready and good enough to merge. Streamlining this bottleneck in the build has been something we’ve wanted to see for a number of years so its good to get this build time performance boost!
  • Some patches have merged over the holiday period, some have been delayed but master-next should be fairly up to date with current patches
  • The occasional issues in oe-selftest are still occurring unfortunately.
  • The perl upgrade continues to be blocked on the fallout from meta-openembedded and the need to make some final tweaks to the patchset.
